What damage can computer viruses cause?
A computer virus can do different things. In principle, however, a computer virus never causes physical damage. This prevents a virus from physically destroying your hard drive. However, viruses can overload, mess up, or infect file systems. Your computer will then perform, for example, tasks that you have not started. Or a computer virus saves your keystrokes, such as passwords or online banking data. Criminals steal this data and use your bank details to make purchases or withdraw money from your bank account. Financial damage can also result from industrial espionage. Hackers then use viruses to steal secrets from banks, companies, offices etc.
