Risk factors include:
- Smoking.
- Malnutrition or anemia.

- Low-level tumors.
- Radiation therapy.
- Active sepsis/septic shock.
- Intraoperative blood transfusion.
- Obesity or diabetes mellitus.
- Emergency surgery.
- Prolonged operation times.
