How is anal dysplasia treated?
There is a newer way of finding anal squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) and treating them. This technique, called chromoendoscopy with narrow band imaging and acetic acid (NBIA), combines the use of an endoscope (a thin and flexible tube that allows the doctor to see inside the gastrointestinal tract) and stains or colors that make it easier to see when tissue is abnormal. During the procedure, abnormal tissue can be destroyed when it is found. This removes the possibility of dysplasia becoming anal cancer.
If anal warts are found, they can be treated in various ways, including:
- Topical drugs
- Cryotherapy (freezing)
- Surgical removal or burning
