How is anal dysplasia diagnosed?

Your doctor will visually and physically inspect you if anal growths or symptoms are present. There are two main ways that anal dysplasia is diagnosed in addition to a physical examination. They are:

• Anal Papanicolaou test (anal Pap test or smear), which is a test that involves swabbing the anus for cells that are examined under a microscope.
• Biopsy, which involves tissue removal, and a microscopic examination of the biopsy tissue by a pathologist.
