How is a brain abscess diagnosed?

The diagnosis is made through the performance of a  scanner or computed tomography (CAT ) or  magnetic resonance imaging  (MRI).

A punch biopsy of abscess material is usually done to identify the cause of the infection.

With the results of these tests, patients can begin to be treated before having a microbiological diagnosis.

A brain and nervous system (neurological) exam will usually show signs of increased intracranial pressure and problems with brain function.
