Sneezing is caused by irritation of the mucous membranes in the nose or throat. It can be very annoying, but it is rarely a sign of a serious problem.

Sneezing can be due to:

  • Allergy to pollen ( allergic rhinitis ), mold, dander, and dust
  • Inhalation of corticosteroids (from certain nasal sprays)
  • Common cold or flu
  • drug withdrawal
  • Triggers like dust, air pollution, dry air, spicy foods, strong emotions, certain medications, and powders
