Previously it was believed that the human genome was invariant beyond mutations at the cellular level (since they die and are born continuously). Epigenetics has been breaking molds in recent years, since it has been discovered that there are mechanisms by which the regulation of genes can vary over time without changes in the DNA. There is still a long way to go to understand these complex phenomena.
